Valentine comes from the latin word "Valentinus", a proper name derived from the word "valens", meaning to be strong, powerful and mighty.
Valentines Day actually started 1500 years ago. It was originally a day set aside as a pagan holiday in honor of the hunter Nimrod (Genesis 10:9) and Lupercus. The Greeks called Lupercus by the name of "Pan". The Semites called "Pan" Baal," according to the classical dictionaries. Baal mentioned in the Bible was merely another name for Nimrod the hunter, Nimrod was Lupercus the wolf hunter of the Romans.
Centuries before Christ the Pagan Romans celebrated February 15th as an idolatrous and sensuous festival called Lupercalia in honor of Lupercus "hunter of the wolves". When Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Catholic Empire the Roman citizens did not want to discard the pagan free for all. This free for all festival was and old custom handed down from the Roman festival of Lupercalia, it was celebrated in February, when the names of young women were put into a box and drawn out by men as chance directed. So, it was not until the reign of Pope Gelasius that the holiday became a Christian custom. Pope Gelasius changed Lupercalia on February 15th to St. Valentine's day on February 14th.
Legend says that there was a priest named Valentine ( which is a very common Roman name) defied the orders of the Roman Emperor Cladius and continued to perform marriages. Seemingly, Cladius realized no young men wanted to join his army because they didn't want ot leave their wives. Although, when it was discovered that Valentine was still performing marriages in secret, he was sentenced to death. Before Valentine died he allegedly cured the jailer's daughter of blindness and sent a note to her signed from Valentine. Valentine died on February 14th 269 A.D., and in 496 A.D. February 14th was named by Pope Gelasius to honor St. Valentine. However the first Valentines are credited to Charles, Duke of Orleans, who wrote romantic verses and sent them to his wife. Also, a woman named Esther Howland is credited with sending the first Valentine in the United States, and the U.S. postal services is credited with advancing the popularity of sending Valentine's in the mid 1800's.
